Overview


Naim Süleymanoğlu, known as “Pocket Hercules” due to his short stature and immense strength, is considered one of the greatest weightlifters in history. Born on January 23, 1967, in Ptichar, Bulgaria, Süleymanoğlu faced significant challenges as a member of Bulgaria’s Turkish minority, leading to his defection to Turkey in 1986. He became a Turkish citizen and went on to achieve legendary status in the sport.

Süleymanoğlu won three consecutive Olympic gold medals in weightlifting at the 1988 Seoul, 1992 Barcelona, and 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He set multiple world records throughout his career, including an astonishing clean and jerk lift of 190 kilograms, which was more than three times his body weight. He was known for his unparalleled work ethic and determination, often performing under immense pressure. Süleymanoğlu’s achievements include seven World Championship titles and setting 46 world records.

Beyond his Olympic success, Süleymanoğlu was a national hero in Turkey and a symbol of excellence in sports. His life story, marked by both athletic triumphs and personal challenges, has been widely celebrated, including being featured on the cover of Time magazine and in a 2019 biographical film.
