Roger Milla, born Albert Roger Mooh Miller on May 20, 1952, in Yaoundé, Cameroon, is a legendary footballer known for his remarkable performances in international tournaments, particularly the FIFA World Cup. Milla began his professional career in the 1970s, playing for clubs like Leopard Douala, Tonnerre Yaoundé, and several French clubs, including Valenciennes, Monaco, Bastia, Saint-Étienne, and Montpellier. He was celebrated for his skill, agility, and the joyous flair he brought to the game.
Milla gained global fame at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where at 38, he scored four goals, helping Cameroon become the first African team to reach the World Cup quarter-finals. His iconic corner-flag dance celebration became a symbol of his exuberance and passion for the game. He continued to make history at the 1994 World Cup by scoring against Russia, becoming the oldest goalscorer in World Cup history at 42.
Milla’s international career was marked by his contributions to Cameroon’s national team, including two Africa Cup of Nations victories (1984 and 1988) and being named African Player of the Year twice (1976 and 1990).
