Overview


Miroslav Cerar, born on October 28, 1939, in Ljubljana, is one of the most accomplished gymnasts in history, particularly noted for his mastery of the pommel horse. Competing for Yugoslavia, Cerar won two Olympic gold medals in the pommel horse event at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Additionally, he earned a bronze medal on the horizontal bar in 1964. Cerar’s success extended to the World Championships, where he secured six gold medals, including three on the pommel horse, and numerous other podium finishes.

Beyond the global stage, Cerar was a dominant force in European gymnastics, winning a total of 15 European Championship medals, with nine of them being gold. He also claimed 13 national titles and was honored multiple times as Yugoslavia’s Athlete of the Year. Cerar was known for his elegance and technical precision, making him a standout performer in his era.

In recognition of his contributions to gymnastics, Cerar was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1999. He has remained an influential figure in sports, serving in various capacities within the Slovenian Olympic Committee and the European Fair Play Movement.
