Jesse Owens was an American track and field athlete who gained international fame for his remarkable achievements at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He won four gold medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4 × 100 meters relay, becoming the first American track and field athlete to win four gold medals in a single Olympic Games. His victories were particularly notable because they took place in Nazi Germany, challenging Adolf Hitler’s ideology of Aryan superiority.
