Eric Heiden is a retired American speed skater and cyclist known for his dominance in speed skating during the late 1970s and early 1980s. He made history at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid by winning five gold medals in all the speed skating events (500m, 1000m, 1500m, 5000m, and 10,000m). This achievement remains unparalleled in the history of the Winter Olympics. Heiden set four Olympic records and one world record during these games. He was known for his powerful skating style and exceptional athleticism. After retiring from speed skating, Heiden pursued a career in cycling, participating in the professional circuit and even competing in the Tour de France. He later earned a medical degree and became an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine.
